The most common problem is a bacterial infection, affecting up to 20 per cent of all piercings. But Holbrooke added that body piercings are generally safe when performed by a trained professional. Make sure you use sterile piercing equipment and follow safety precautions for handling blood and infection control.

Also talk with your body pierced people about your medical history, including allergies, diabetes, and heart disease risk, said Holbrooke. If you currently have an infection, your body piercing delay until you are well, and be aware of your own previous medical problems - some conditions weaken the immune system, which increases your chances of infection from your piercing.

Avoid taking aspirin for a week prior to piercing your body, and avoid non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen or naproxen) for at least one day before getting piercings and for seven days afterwards. Do not forget to talk to your piercer about how long it usually takes for the wound to heal, ask what to expect in terms of side effects, and learn how to keep your new piercing clean afterwards.

Also factor in your lifestyle. If you are a contact sport practice or stab you are in an area that will easily tear the clothes, it may irritate the skin. Or if you have a job that requires you to frequently remove your piercing, it can also increase your risk of infection and prolong the healing time.
